Happy Jalapeño Hemp Seed Hummus
We included the word happy in the title of our creamy, dreamy, oil-free, and gluten-free Happy Jalapeño Hemp Seed Hummus recipe because we smile whenever we think about it!
Maybe it’s because it tastes adventurous with its unanticipated list of ingredients and subtle hint of heat. Or perhaps we smile because it’s so impressively good tasting that everyone who’s ever tried it wants the recipe. It could be because it tastes and looks like a party in a bowl! And last but not least, maybe it’s because Happy Jalapeño Hemp Seed Hummus is SO easy to make!
Uh, huh; I’m with you on this one. The fact that Jalapeño Hemp Seed Hummus is incredibly easy to make AND tastes like a party in a bowl is plenty enough reasons for it be devoured!
Happy Jalapeño Hemp Seed Hummus is as simple as 1, 2, 3:
- dump, pardon my French, the ingredients in your food processor
- give it a few spins and blend until creamy
- taste and season to create a customized batch of healthy homemade hummus with a delightfully, tangy, kick!
We topped our Happy Jalapeño Hemp Seed Hummus with hemp seeds for an important reason. Flax seeds, walnuts, chia seeds and hemp seeds have omega 6 and also omega 3, which means, in short, these nuts and seeds provide a balanced oil ratio which makes them a healthier nut option than those measuring high in only omega 6 or omega 3.
So, it seems that balance plays a crucial role in most things in life, even nuts!
As you’ve likely guessed, we serve this as a snack with our favorite organic corn chips, as a dip for freshly chopped veggies, as a spread on a wrap, stuffed in a burrito or as a part of our favorite Buddha bowl combos.
By the way, our Happy Jalapeño Hemp Seed Hummus is a fabulous make-ahead dish because it tastes even better the day after you make it and even better still, the day after that! The seasonings seem to get comfortable after they’re blended and accentuate the positive in each other, like a happy marriage.
So enjoy it right after you prepare it or make it ahead for some home run party food. There’s no doubt you’ll find tons of clever uses for this yummy in your tummy hummus. And we bet that when you taste it, it makes you smile. : )

Quick and easy Happy HEALTHY Jalapeño Hemp Seed Hummus will soon become your most FAVORITE spicy hummus recipe, ever! We intentionally filled our oil-free healthier hummus with an extra helping of beneficial ingredients that taste as delicious as they make you feel. And by using the aquafaba (bean broth) as the liquid in this recipe, the hummus turns out super lite and creamy! Make this ahead or eat it straight out of the food processor, we won’t tell!
Ingredients
- two cloves of garlic, peeled and minced
- 2/3 cup of jalapeños from a can or jar, more or less depending on the intensity you desire
- 1 tbsp of liquid from the peppers
- leftover aquafaba, which is the chickpea liquid or broth, reserved and set aside
- two cans of chickpeas drained & rinsed with liquid set aside as mentioned above
- 1/4 cup of tahini - We enjoy using this organic brand of tahini.
- freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice, to taste - We keep this organic bottled lemon juice on hand for when we're out of lemons.
- 1 tsp of cumin
- an optional pinch of cayenne pepper
- 1/2 tsp of smoked paprika
- salt, to taste, or better still, use pink Himalayan sea salt
- 1/4 cup hemp seed hearts
- an optional drizzle of hemp seed oil or olive oil
Instructions
- First, begin by finely mincing the garlic by dropping the peeled cloves into a running food processor.
- Next, add the drained chickpeas (with its liquid set aside) and tahini to the processor, blending for a few minutes until mostly smooth.
- Now, add the jalapenos, reserved jalapeno liquid, and cumin, continuing to blend until combined. Once the ingredients have incorporated, drizzle in two tablespoons or so of the reserved chickpea liquid, aquafaba, while the processor is running. Now continue to process the combined ingredients until very smooth and creamy, stopping now and then to scrape the sides of the processor down. Now add the salt and season to taste.
- Sprinkle the top of the hummus with hemp seeds, smoked paprika and the optional drizzle of oil, if using. There are so many terrific flavors in this recipe that oil is not needed to make this taste amazing! By the way, a sprinkle of cilantro tastes fantastic with this hummus if you would like to garnish with a few fresh herbs. Enjoy this tasty hummus with your favorite organic corn chips or as a dip for your favorite freshly chopped veggies. Store any leftover Happy Jalapeño Hemp Seed Hummus in an airtight container in the fridge for about five days.
Notes
- For a surprising sweet twist on this excellent hummus recipe, trade out the regular jarred jalapeños for these: Trader Joe's Hot & Sweet Jalapeños.
- My family and I like to store portions of leftover hummus in small serving size containers to have something easy to pack for lunch or a healthy snack.
- For a super smooth hummus consistency, use more liquid and process longer. Also, using a high powered blender instead of a food processor creates an added level of creaminess and works well. When using a blender be extra sure to use plenty of liquid.
- And if you happen to have a few minutes to spare, for an extra tasty hummus, substitute home-cooked chickpeas with broth reserved. Nothing makes hummus taste better than home cooked chickpeas!
- When we squeeze fresh lemons and limes for our recipes we like to use this handy tool. And if you'd like to serve some hummus in environmentally friendly coconut bowls like ours, here's the link to a lovely set.
